  1.  The name Winston means “from a friendly country” and “Smith” is a common last name.  How is this ironic? (2)
  2. What is Newspeak?  What is its purpose? (Refer to appendix 1 and page 56).  Why is it essential for The Party to rid the language of synonyms and antonyms? (4)
  3. How is language important to freedom? Discuss. (4)
  4. Who is Big Brother and what is the significance of his name? (2)
  5. Winston states that “he had recognized himself as a dead man” (page 30).  What does he mean? (4)
  6. What do you make of Mrs. Parson’s children? (2)

  1. How do we know that Finnie and Paul are true friends? Give examples. (2)
  2. On page 2, Paul the narrator says, “When I met Finnie Walsh, I was too young to realize that we weren’t supposed to be friends.”  What does he mean by this statement? (2)
  3. Do you think it is likely that Finnie and Paul would have become friends if they had met in grade 9 as opposed to grade 3?  Why or why not? (2)
  4. Give three personality traits that describe Finnie Walsh.  Support your analysis with examples. (6)

Assignment: The final copy of your essay is due on Tuesday, December 1st.  Please double space and type.

If you were away today, you missed a vocabulary quiz and an essay editing session.  Be sure to check for the following when editing your essay:

  1. Does your essay start with a hook or general statement?  If not, don’t forget to add one.
  2. Does your introduction have a sneak preview?
  3. Is the introduction more than 3 sentences?
  4. Scan your essay for “I”, “You”, “We”, and “Our”.  Remove them (unless they are apart of a line quotation).
  5. Scan your essay for contractions like “can’t” and “don’t”.  Remove them and replace them with the full words (i.e. cannot or does not”)
  6. Check your quotations.  Are they integrated?  If you are not sure, click here.
  7. Is your essay written using present tense?  It should be!
  8. Use persuasive language in your essay.  Click here for a list of persuasive and transition words.

ENGLISH 12

Homework:  (1) Read up to page 39 of the novel, (2) Highlight or underline anything strange or ironic in the first 11 pages of the novel 1984 (please use the photocopies given in class!).  Annotate your observations in the margins.  You will write a timed-paragraph tomorrow in class based on your observations.

Good work today with the rough draft essay writing in class!  You all worked very hard!  The final copy of your essay is due on Tuesday, December 1st.  The final copy should be double spaced and typed.

Homework: (1) study for your vocabulary quiz and (2) finish your rough draft if you have not done so already.  Be sure to bring your rough draft to school tomorrow as we will be editing it in class.

Study for the Hamlet Unit Test.  Test is on Monday, November 23rd.  Part I is matching, Part II is multiple choice, and Part III is a composition.  Be sure to review your 60 + study questions generated in class on today.

 

ENGLISH 9

Be sure to pick one essay topic before Monday’s class.  On Monday, I will teach you how to create an outline for the essay and how to write an essay.  On Tuesday, you will write the essay in class.  Here are the topics:

 

  1. Daring to disturb the universe is a powerful theme in both The Chocolate War and Dead Poet’s Society.  Compare three characters and discuss how they dare to disturb the universe and the results of their actions. 
  2. In both The Chocolate War and Dead Poet’s Society, there are characters who choose to be non-conformists.  Compare three characters and discuss the consequences of breaking conformity and whether or not their actions were worthwhile.   
  3. Abuse of power is a key issue in both The Chocolate War and Dead Poet’s Society.  Compare three characters and discuss how they abuse their power.  Also show the consequences of their actions.
