      • Topic ~ What is Holden’s theme song?
      • Length ~ approximately 800 words (5 paragraphs, double-spaced)
      • Include ~ quotations from both the song and the novel as evidence
      • Provide ~ a copy of the lyrics

A Level:

  • The song has links to multiple aspects of Holden’s emotions, thoughts, personality, and beliefs.
  • The analysis is thorough and a variety of points are used as evidence.  The analysis focuses on multiple aspects and events of the novel
  • The analysis is persuasive and written using sophisticated language.

B Level:

  • The song has links to multiple aspects of Holden’s emotions, thoughts, personality, and beliefs.
  • The analysis is complete and a variety of points are used as evidence.  The analysis tends to focus on limited aspects and events of the novel.
  • The analysis attempts to be persuasive and is written using formal language.

C Level:

  • The song lyrics are limited and represent only one or two aspects of emotions, thoughts, personality, and beliefs.
  • The analysis focuses on superficial aspects of character, setting, and plot.  Evidence may be repetitive.
  • The amount of analysis is limited or superficial.
  • The analysis attempts or lacks persuasion and/or the language is simplistic or informal.
